What ingredients appear in memory supplements?

Bacopa, ginkgo, choline forms, B vitamins, lutein and green tea extract are common. Each has different evidence.

Formulas copy each other, so the same names recur. The point to grasp is that these ingredients are not one family. Each answers a different question and comes with its own limits, amounts and cautions.

The sibling-pack list given to this site names eleven lines, all shown below with the groups they fall into. It is unconfirmed, so check your bottle. No amount is printed for any of them.

  1. 1Himalayan pink saltNamed in the sibling-pack list · amount not printed
  2. 2Cinnamon extractNamed in the sibling-pack list · amount not printed
  3. 3AGP choline (alpha-GPC)Named in the sibling-pack list · amount not printed
  4. 4Bacopa monnieri (20%)Named in the sibling-pack list · printed 20% · amount not printed
  5. 5Lutein (5%) and Zeaxanthin (5%)Named in the sibling-pack list · printed 5% each · amount not printed
  6. 6Bilberry leaf powderNamed in the sibling-pack list · amount not printed
  7. 7Vitamin B6Named in the sibling-pack list · amount not printed
  8. 8Ginkgo biloba powderNamed in the sibling-pack list · amount not printed
  9. 9Vitamin B12Named in the sibling-pack list · amount not printed
  10. 10Green tea extract (50%)Named in the sibling-pack list · printed 50% · amount not printed

Names as given in the list given to this site for the sibling pack, in that order (lutein and zeaxanthin share a row here, so 11 names make 10 rows). A percent in brackets is printed in that list; what it measures is not stated. No milligram amount is printed anywhere we can see, and none is invented. Confirm every line and amount on your bottle.

What is each ingredient studied for?

Mostly narrow outcomes in small groups.

Evidence by ingredient
IngredientWhat the evidence says
BacopaSmall 12-week trials, better scores on some recall tests (Pase 2012, bacopa review)
GinkgoNo difference in dementia in a trial of 3,069 adults aged 75 or older (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial)
Choline formsLittle support for slowing dementia (NIH ODS, Choline)
B6 and B12No cognitive benefit in trials of B vitamins (McCleery 2018, Cochrane B vitamins)
Lutein and zeaxanthinNo significant effect on cognition (Chew 2015, AREDS2 cognition)
Green tea extractNo cognition statement from NCCIH (NCCIH, Green Tea)

Which named ingredients lack memory evidence?

Three named lines have no memory evidence in the sources we hold.

Himalayan pink salt, cinnamon extract and bilberry leaf powder are on the sibling-pack list. NCCIH says bilberry has not been clearly shown to help any health condition (NCCIH, Bilberry). FDA's sodium page does not discuss pink salt, and sodium counts toward the daily total (FDA, Sodium in Your Diet). For cinnamon, the issue is cassia and coumarin (NCCIH, Cinnamon), not memory.

That does not make them harmful in a capsule. It means no source we hold ties them to memory.

What do ingredient names hide?

Form, standardization and amount.

  • Form: "AGP choline" is read as alpha-GPC, but other choline forms differ.
  • Standardization: a printed percentage like "(20%)" should state what it measures. On the sibling-pack list it does not.
  • Amount: bacopa trials used 300 to 450 mg of extract a day; that is a trial figure, never a CogniHoney one.
  • Source: cinnamon species and tea extract grade often go unnamed.

Open the ingredient index or the studied doses page for the bench.

Which cautions come with the common ingredients?

Ginkgo and bleeding, green tea extract and the liver, and bacopa and several medicines.

Those are on the medicine safety page. Ask a pharmacist first.

FAQ01

CogniHoney questions people ask

What is the most common memory supplement ingredient?

Bacopa and ginkgo appear most often, along with B vitamins, choline forms, lutein and green tea extract.

Do any of these ingredients prevent dementia?

Not shown. NIA recommends no supplement for that, and the ginkgo trial found no effect.

Why does a label list a percentage after an ingredient?

It usually shows an extract's standardization, but the CogniHoney list gives no statement of what its percentages measure.

Are there ingredients I should avoid with certain medicines?

Yes. Ginkgo, bacopa and green tea extract each have interaction cautions, so ask your pharmacist.
