CogniHoney and Your Liver: Green Tea Extract and Cassia
If you have liver disease, ask first. Green tea extract is a well-established but uncommon cause of liver injury, and cassia cinnamon contains coumarin; both are on the list given to this site for the sibling pack. No study has tested CogniHoney, and no amount is printed to measure against case reports.

Is it safe for the liver?
If you have liver disease, ask first. Green tea extract is a well-established but uncommon cause of liver injury, and cassia cinnamon has coumarin.
LiverTox rates green tea extract a well-established cause of clinically apparent liver injury (NIH LiverTox, Green Tea). NCCIH says such injury is uncommon and reported mainly with extracts in tablet or capsule form (NCCIH, Green Tea). Cinnamon adds a second question, taken up below.
Both are on the list given to this site for the sibling pack, which is unconfirmed. Green tea extract is printed with "(50%)" and no statement of what that refers to. No milligram amount exists, so we cannot say how close any capsule sits to the intakes in case reports.
How does green tea extract injure the liver?
Rarely, and in a way that is hard to predict.
LiverTox describes an acute, hepatitis-like pattern, usually one to six months after starting. Most people recover once they stop, but fatal liver failure has occurred, and no clear dose dependency was found (NIH LiverTox, Green Tea). NCCIH notes that an immune-gene variant carried by 5 to 15 percent of Americans may raise susceptibility (NCCIH, Green Tea).
USP's review adds that case reports span a wide range of intakes with wide differences in susceptibility. It also says bolus doses on an empty stomach raise absorption (USP 2020, green tea extract review). The dose wording for the sibling pack asks for a full glass of water before the largest meal; confirm the directions on your bottle.
What about the cinnamon?
It depends on the species, which labels often leave out.
Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, and NCCIH says prolonged use could be an issue for sensitive people such as those with liver disease. Ceylon cinnamon has only trace coumarin (NCCIH, Cinnamon). The list names "cinnamon extract" without a species, so we cannot tell which one it is.
| Named line | Liver question | What is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Green tea extract (50%) | Rare, well-established injury | Amount; what the 50% measures |
| Cinnamon extract | Coumarin, if cassia | Species; amount |
| Bacopa monnieri (20%) | Inhibits liver enzymes; no human liver data | Amount; extract type (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri) |

See packsWhat warning signs should you watch for?
Know them before you start, not after.
The USP caution lists abdominal pain, dark urine and jaundice as reasons to stop and see a practitioner (USP 2020, green tea extract review).
- Bleeding or bruisingUnusual bruising, nosebleeds, blood in urine or stool, or heavy bleeding. Stop the capsules and call your doctor; ginkgo is named in the list.
- Stomach upset, dizziness, headacheThe usual complaints named for ginkgo and bacopa. Stop and ask your pharmacist if they continue.
- Liver warning signsAbdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Stop and see a clinician the same day (green tea extract, cassia cinnamon).
- Allergic reactionHives, swelling of the lips or face, or wheezing. Stop and get help.
- Call 911, do not driveFace drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech, sudden confusion, sudden vision loss, a sudden severe headache, or chest pain: call 911 right away.
Stroke signs: CDC (CDC, Stroke Signs and Symptoms). Liver signs: USP caution on green tea extract (USP 2020, green tea extract review). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.
People with a liver condition should read the cassia and green tea page and the green tea extract page with their doctor.
Does the liver question change the decision?
The reported risk is uncommon, and for anyone with liver disease it is a reason to ask first.
The upside is unproven, since no study has tested CogniHoney. Weigh a rare, serious risk against an unmeasured benefit.
