Vitamin B12 and Memory: When It Matters

Quick answer

Low vitamin B12 can cause memory trouble, and a doctor can test for it. Taking extra B12 when your level is normal has not improved cognition in trials of older adults. The sibling-pack list names B12 but prints no amount, and no study tested CogniHoney.

Does vitamin B12 affect memory?

Low B12 can, but adding B12 when your level is normal has not helped in trials.

Low B12 is linked with poor cognition in observational studies. Trials show B12 alone or with other B vitamins does not improve cognition in older adults (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12). A Cochrane review of 879 people with mild cognitive impairment found probably little or no effect on episodic memory (McCleery 2018, Cochrane B vitamins).

Those trials used amounts of their own, so they say little about one capsule of unknown strength. The unconfirmed sibling-pack list names vitamin B12 with no amount; no milligram or microgram figure exists in our materials.

Who is at risk of low B12?

Older adults, vegans and people on certain stomach or diabetes medicines.

Groups at risk of B12 deficiency
GroupWhy
Older adultsAbsorption often falls with age
Pernicious anemiaThe gut cannot absorb B12
Stomach or bowel surgery or diseaseLess area or acid to absorb it
VegansFew plant sources
Long-term acid reducers or metforminBoth are tied to low levels (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12)

Is memory trouble sometimes a B12 problem?

Yes, and it is one of the treatable causes a doctor checks first.

Mayo Clinic lists B12 deficiency beside medicines, thyroid trouble, sleep apnea and depression (Mayo Clinic, Memory Loss). A blood test settles it, and the clinician can then match any treatment to the cause. Guessing with a capsule can delay finding the real cause.

  • MedicinesSome medicines, or combinations of them, can cause forgetfulness or confusion. Tell your clinician about every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement. (Mayo Clinic, Memory Loss) (NIA, Cognitive Health and Older Adults)
  • Low vitamin B12Mayo Clinic says not enough B12, common in older adults, can affect memory. A blood test shows it; ODS lists who is at risk. (Mayo Clinic, Memory Loss) (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12)
  • Mood, stress and sleepStress, anxiety, depression and untreated sleep apnea can all affect memory and attention. (Mayo Clinic, Memory Loss)
  • Thyroid, alcohol and head injuryAn underactive thyroid, heavy alcohol use and head injuries, even without loss of consciousness, can affect memory. (Mayo Clinic, Memory Loss)
  • DeliriumNIA describes delirium as a sudden state of confusion, often in a hospital stay, and says to seek treatment. (NIA, Cognitive Health and Older Adults)
  • Early dementiaMemory loss that disrupts daily life is often an early sign; the Alzheimer's Association says do not ignore it and to see a doctor. (Alzheimer's Association, 10 Early Signs) (Mayo Clinic, Memory Loss)

What should you do before taking B12?

Ask for a blood level if you are in a risk group, then decide.

The adult RDA is 2.4 mcg a day and no upper limit is set because toxicity is low. Low toxicity does not make it useful when your level is already fine. If you take metformin or an acid reducer, say so when you ask for the test; do not stop either on your own. See the vitamin B12 page and memory red flags. No study has tested CogniHoney.
