Does bacopa help memory?
Small, short trials found better scores on some word-recall tests after 12 weeks, and a larger trial is still needed.
A review of six trials in adults without dementia used three different extracts at 300 to 450 mg of extract a day. Bacopa improved 9 of 17 free-recall tests and showed little effect in other areas (Pase 2012, bacopa review).
A later analysis pooled nine placebo-controlled trials with 518 people. It found a shorter Trail B time and a shorter choice reaction time. The authors wrote that only a larger, well-designed study could confirm the effect (Kongkeaw 2014, bacopa meta-analysis).
Read that as a lead, not a result. Free recall of word lists is a lab task. It is not the same as remembering a name at a party.

People on thyroid, anticholinergic or cholinergic medicines, and those with a slow heart rate, ulcer, asthma or COPD.
Bacopa is generally well tolerated. Stomach upset is the common effect, with more stools, nausea and cramps, and it is mildly sedating. It may add to thyroid hormone, reduce anticholinergic medicines and add to cholinergic ones, and it inhibits several liver enzymes. No human liver data exist (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri).
